The 22 year old American model, Bella Hadid, was recently accused of being racist after she posted a picture of her shoe pointing towards Saudi and UAE’s planes.
Bella Hadid recently posted a picture in an Instagram story with her foot resting against a glass window. The heel of the shoe was pointing towards planes with Saudi Arab and UAE’s flags on them and it seemed like she was “kicking” them. This stirred a lot of theories of racism against the two nations by the Palestinian-American model. The picture received a lot of hate, especially from the people of Middle East, and also led to a now viral hashtag #BellaHadidIsRacist.
Many people expressed their outrage as social media flooded with hate tweets against the 22 year old. People went as far as calling her a “piece of trash” and suggesting to permanently ban her from entering the two countries.
Some people dragged her Palestinian Heritage into the issue, questioning about her bold actions against UAE and Saudi Arabia. According to one tweet directed towards Hadid, she was accused of being “ugly inside” and that she should stop wearing fancy clothes and fight for Palestine. Another tweet questioned her ethics and the work she has done for her country, “Palestine”. The tweet said, “We all know Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates helps other people in the world, but the question is What did you do for your country “Palestine”?? Support them by take off your clothes in America and be a model”. Furthermore, the people also threatened to boycott the brands she worked with. In a tweet by @hayat24h, “Since Bella Hadid represents Dior I will now stop buying Dior products due to her disrespect to Saudi Arabia”.

The harsh comments from the public led her to publicly apologize for the racist connotations in her post saying that it was a misunderstanding. She apologized through her Instagram story and twitter saying, “I would never want my posts or platform to be used for hate against anyone, especially those of my own beautiful and powerful heritage. I love and care so much about the Muslim and Arab side of my family, as well as my brothers and sisters through out the world. Not only do I have so much respect from the bottom of my heart, I have always tried to stand up for what I feel is right, especially regarding the great Middle East”. She concluded by apologizing to whoever got offended by her picture, saying, “I want to send a sincere apology to those who ever thought I would put blame on them, especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE… This was never the case, and I hope you can understand the misunderstanding. I will be more responsible when bringing awareness to all causes.”
Hadid is known for being outspoken about the prevailing issues in the world. She attended protests demanding right for the Palestinians and raising awareness about the problems of the Sudanese people. From the given history of the model and the public apology, it seems like it was just a misunderstanding and the people interpreted the picture incorrectly.
