The news came out just a couple days ago that famous YouTuber Desmond Amofah, better known online as Etika, passed away on Monday, June 24. The star’s body was found near South Street Seaport inside the East River after the New York Police Department had been on the hunt for the missing person. The NYPD investigation commenced into the missing person with a statement sent out to the public for any leads on the 29 year old who was unreachable at this point.

The NYPD’s twitter account sent out a statement on Thursday, the 20th of June, asking about the YouTuber:

Have you seen Desmond Amofah aka Etika? He was last heard from June 19 at about 8PM by phone. He is 29 years old, approx 6 feet tall, and 160 lbs. He is a known @YouTube blogger and has many people concerned after a recent video.”

The search for the missing person continued through the weekend and into Monday. On Tuesday morning, the headlines emerged of the YouTuber having been found dead in the East River. The New York Police Department came out with an official statement on the matter as well, closing the search for the online star:

We regret to inform that Desmond Amofah aka Etika has been found deceased.”

Today, the official medical examiner’s report has come out and the cause of death has been determined to be drowning by suicide.

Detective Sophia Mason DCPI Spokesperson also released a statement detailing the discovery of the YouTuber’s body, saying that:

On Monday, June 24, 2019 at approximately 1818 hours, police responded to a 911 call for a person floating in the waters in the vicinity of South Street Seaport in the confines of the 1st Precinct. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive, unidentified male at the location. NYPD Harbor removed the male to the Pier 16 where EMS pronounced him deceased.”
