Kim Kardashian renames her shapeware line to SKIMS Solutionwear

After receiving backlash, Kim Kardashian has renamed her shapewear line from ‘Kimono’ to ‘SKIMS Solutionwear’.

The Keeping up with the Kardashians star introduced the then “Kimono” shapewear in June 2019. After failing to find articles that blended with her skin tone and effectively supported her body, she decided to develop a personal line – a collection, she said, took 15 years to develop.

Finally I can share with you guys this project that I have been developing for the last year. I’ve been passionate about this for 15 years. Kimono is my take on shapewear and solutions for women that actually work. I would always cut up my shapewear to make my own styles, and there have also been so many times I couldn’t find a shapeware color that blended with my skin tone so we needed a solution for all of this. The third pic is the solution short. I developed this style for all of those times I wanted to wear a dress or skirt with a slit and still needed the support. Introducing Kimono Solutionwear™ for every body. Coming Soon in sizes XXS – 4XL in 9 shades. I can’t wait for you to feel this fabric!#KimonoBody @kimono Photos by Vanessa Beecroft

The collection comprises of articles in 9 different flesh-tones that range from XXS to 4XL, including unitards, bras, spandex shorts and a special ‘solution’ short – designed for thigh-high slit dresses and skirts.

According to the brand website, the line is a “culmination of Kim’s personal experience…fueled by her passion to create truly considered and highly technical solutions for everybody”, with each article designed to “enhance, smooth, life or sculpt”.

However, the brand faced major backlash from the public, claiming it was “appropriation of the traditional kimono in the name of her upcoming shapewear line”. Japanese critics said the name – that Kim Kardashian trademarked – was an inappropriate take on the centuries-old Japanese clothing culture.

Kyoto’s Mayor, Daisaku Kadokawa, also wrote a letter to the beauty mogul, asking her to change the name of the brand. He wrote, “I am writing to convey our thoughts on Kimono and ask you to re-consider your decision of using the name Kimono in your trademark”.

After taking the feedback into consideration, Kim Kardashian has changed the name of her line from ‘Kimono’ to ‘SKIMS Solutionwear’. She announced the news on her Twitter, saying, “My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me. I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name. After much thought and consideration, I’m excited to announce the launch of SKIMS Solutionwear.”

The line is to launch on September 10 and would include sizes up to 5XL.

The name was apparently suggested by one of the followers who said, “u should rename your brand SKIM: skin (cause the shapewear are made to fit your skin) + ur name Kim”, however, no details of how the name was chosen have been released.
