First Case of Mysterious Chinese SARS-like Virus Confirmed in Japan

The Japanese government has confirmed the case of an unknown virus from a patient who was treated for pneumonia this Thursday after returning from China. This virus has recently emerged in China and it belongs to the pathogenic family of SARS.

Lab test showed the presence of coronavirus in a patient who become infected from an outbreak in Wuhan city of China.

The ministry of health and welfare stated that Cough and fever were the first symptoms seen in man when he was in Wuhan. He was hospitalized on Jan 6 four days later after returning to Japan when the symptoms prolonged and continued. The x-ray report showed signs of pneumonia in patients.

When the lab test was conducted this Tuesday, the identified coronavirus in the sample was similar to the virus which was found in the Wuhan outbreak patients.

After improving the condition, the man has been discharged from the hospital.  Kyodo news agency identified him as a Chinses man who is almost 30 years old or older than this. While treating the man his family and staff did not get the disease.

Last week 41 cases of pneumonia caused by coronavirus were highlighted. A 61 years old patient died due to this virus and is first known to China’s death from a virus.

Coronavirus, a large family of viruses. Some of the viruses cause the common cold. The virus that appears in the camels, bat and other animals cause severe disease. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have explained the more severe symptoms of coronavirus including shortness of breath, body aches, and chills. Runny nose, cough, fever, and headache are some common symptoms.

World Health Organization has confirmed another case in Thailand when a Chinese traveler moved there. This is the second time when the coronavirus is detected outside China. Precautions have also been taken by other Asian countries.

The health ministry added, the government of Indonesia has installed the thermal imaging equipment at seaports and airports for detecting body temperatures. It is said that travelers will be interviewed by higher authorities if any person is detected with high temperatures (more than 38 Celsius) particularly from China and Hong Kong.

Due to the high checking system installed at the airports and seaports, no case of new coronavirus is reported in Indonesia. It was the time of 2006 and 2007 when Indonesia was the world’s hot spot place for avian influenza for both humans and birds. At that time 146 cases of human death were reported to WHO.

An official of Japan’s health ministry, Eiji Hinoshita, informed reporters that while treatment, the man who came from China told him that he did not visit the Fish market in Wuhan where the pneumonia outbreak was present. Instead, he had close contact with a person who had the symptoms of pneumonia at the place where he stayed. After this, ministry officials keenly observe the activities of patients. Furthermore, officials are checking the people who made contact with him in Japan and China.

Japan’s ministry urged the people to wear masks who return from any other country or come for a visit. If any of them develop the symptoms of cough and fever, he must go for proper medical treatment and care.

The spread of viruses mostly occurs at the lunar new year, when many chinse travel across the world. It is still not clear whether the virus can be transmitted from one human to another but this Wednesday it was clear by authorities that virus could spread inside a family.

Hong Kong authorities said it was the same virus that appeared in SARS epidemic in 2002 and 2003 and killed hundreds of people. No cases of the new virus have been reported and confirmed.
